What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, scientifically proven psychotherapy designed to help people recover from traumatic events and distressing life experiences.

When you experience overwhelming events, your brain’s natural ability to process information can become blocked. The memory essentially becomes “frozen” in its original, raw state.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, gentle tapping, or audio tones. This process reactivates your brain’s natural healing capacity, stripping away the painful emotional “sting” of past memories so you can move forward. It is officially recognised and recommended by major global health bodies, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

What is Attachment-Informed EMDR?

While standard EMDR works exceptionally well for single-event traumas, many individuals experience ongoing relational trauma, emotional neglect, or disruptions during childhood.

These adapted EMDR protocols modify standard procedures to explicitly address these deeper, relational wounds. The work focuses heavily on:

  • Relational Repair: Addressing the core pain of feeling unseen, unsafe, or unloved by early caregivers.
  • Resource Tapping: Actively building internal feelings of safety, protection, and nurturing before processing difficult memories.
  • The Therapeutic Relationship: Using our collaborative, secure online space as a foundation for your progress.

How We Can Work Together

People seek my help with EMDR in two different ways:

  • Singular EMDR Therapy: Coming specifically for focused, short-term EMDR sessions to target and process distinct traumatic memories or blocks.
  • Integrated Psychotherapy: Weaving EMDR naturally into our broader psychotherapy sessions whenever it feels appropriate and helpful for your ongoing progress.

An Integrative, Body-Aware Approach

With over 30 years of clinical experience in the caring profession, my approach to EMDR is deeply collaborative and trauma-informed. I do not just run through a rigid clinical checklist; I engage with you actively, bringing a blend of warmth and compassionate challenge to our sessions.

As  a qualified yoga teacher, my EMDR practice is holistic and body-aware. Trauma is stored physically in the nervous system, not just in the mind. Together, we will focus on helping you feel physically grounded and regulated as we gently process emotional blocks. This is particularly helpful if you feel “stuck” or disconnected, helping you feel more physically connected as we process emotional challenges.
